The HBO crime drama has achieved cult status and boasts an impressive 92% Rotten Tomatoes rating, with fans praising its iconic characters and groundbreaking storytelling

I'm passionate about re-watching TV series. I have particular shows I watch repeatedly throughout the year, like Friends and American Dad !, while others I tend to watch at certain times of year, including Breaking Bad and Chernobyl.

The Sopranos belongs firmly in this second category. The Sopranos debuted on television in 1999 and has since achieved legendary status for its memorable characters, revolutionary narrative techniques, and profound examination of the American psyche. Certainly, it's brutal; undoubtedly, most would characterise it as a "slow starter" initially, and admittedly, some sequences are deeply disturbing, yet these elements keep the show interesting and distinguish it from anything I've previously watched. The series, created by David Chase, focuses on Tony Soprano , a New Jersey crime family leader plagued by anxiety attacks. Looking for help, he begins sessions with Dr Jennifer Melfi , who encourages him to address the difficulties of balancing domestic duties alongside his illegal enterprises, reports the Express. The ensemble also includes Tony's spouse, Carmela , his protégé, Christopher Moltisanti , and numerous relatives, organised crime colleagues, and adversaries. While the storyline might appear relatively straightforward, as a viewer, I consistently find myself engrossed in Tony's family affairs; his marriage to Carmela is strained from the outset as his infidelity and his 'gumar', Irina, are revealed. Tony's bond with his ageing mother provides comedic moments but becomes sinister as her genuine character emerges, while Chris, Tony's 'nephew' , and Paulie 'Walnuts' Gualtieri's turbulent friendship proves utterly amusing at times, though frequently fractured by bitterness surrounding money and status. The late Gandolfini, as the unpredictable Tony Soprano, stands as arguably the most iconic character in the programme, yet he doesn't eclipse some of the show's secondary figures. Falco's interpretation of Tony's spouse proves remarkable as she transitions between devoted mother, pious Catholic, and loyal wife while exploring her suppressed yearnings for autonomy and personal fulfilment. Drea de Matteo portrays Adriana La Cerva, Chris's long-term partner and, later, fiancée. Her superficial, materialistic depiction of Adriana works brilliantly because, despite her numerous shortcomings, you cannot help but sympathise with her. Matteo secured an Emmy Award in 2004 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for this performance. Among the show's standout elements is the relationship between Tony's children, AJ and Meadow Soprano . Their bond mirrors that of any typical siblings - regardless of growing up in a dysfunctional crime family - featuring sibling bickering and adolescent outbursts unfolding amid the brutality and turmoil of organised crime. The Sopranos aired for six seasons between 1999 and 2007, and can currently be watched on NOW TV. The programme has maintained a remarkably strong Rotten Tomatoes score with an overall Tomatometer rating of 92%. Season three even secured a perfect 100% rating. One critique of the programme stated: "There's never been a Mafia drama like this on TV and it's brilliant." Another observed: "Now, watching the show nearly 20 years after its original debut, it still stands up as one of the greatest dramas of all time." The programme garnered acclaim from both critics and audiences alike, a rarity in an age when professional reviewers and viewers seldom agree. One audience member commented on the opening season: "The Sopranos is, without question, one of the greatest drama series ever made, transcending its surface depiction of mafia life to explore the full spectrum of human experience. While violence and organised crime are central elements, the show's genius lies in its ability to intertwine these with heartwarming, heartrending stories that resonate long after viewing." Another penned: "I am a bit late to the party here in 2025, but just watched Season one, in fact binged it and absolutely one of the best series I have ever seen in my life, drama, humour, flawed human characters, excitement. It has it all." The show's conclusion has proved particularly divisive among critics and audiences alike. Without revealing spoilers, it's abrupt and may leave you questioning whether your 86 hours of viewing were worthwhile. My initial reaction was one of shock. Having become so emotionally invested in the family, the characters and their journeys, I genuinely felt quite frustrated with David Chase. How could he leave viewers in such suspense? Yet with repeated viewings, I've grown to appreciate the finale more deeply. Subtle hints and clues peppered throughout the series foreshadow what's approaching, and ultimately, you can't help but respect Chase's creative brilliance. The finale might generate more questions than resolutions, but the clues are there - you just need to search for them.
