Cadbury has been criticized by consumers for downsizing its classic Santa Selection Box and replacing the beloved Double Decker with a smaller caramel Freddo. The move, labeled 'shrinkflation' by consumer expert Martyn James, has sparked outrage on social media with customers accusing the company of ruining Christmas.
Cadbury has made a significant alteration to its Christmas selection box es, and chocoholics are not happy. The beloved confectionery brand has downsized its classic Santa Selection Box by removing the a best loved snack and replacing it with a caramel Freddo, which is roughly half the size.
Consumer expert Martyn James labelled the swap of the Double Decker for a caramel Freddo as an "outrageous example of shrinkflation." "A Freddo is the lowliest of chocs and is not a fair swap for the majestic Double Decker," he expressed. Speaking to The Sun, he also claimed that Cadbury - the company behind favourites like Dairy Milk, Twirl, Wispa, Double Decker, Fudge, Freddo and more - had "ruined" the festive favourite. This year's Cadbury Christmas selection box weighs just 125g compared to last year's 145g box. According to reports, the selection boxes are now a quarter smaller than they were in 2018 when they weighed 169g. In addition to this, they have also increased their prices. In 2021, when they were slightly bigger, they could be purchased in a variety of supermarkets from around £1.25 to £2. This year, customers can look at paying from around £1.75 to £2.75 at four of the UK's main supermarket chains, including Tesco and Asda. This isn't the first time the confectionery company has caused an uproar among chocolate lovers. Back in 2017, Cadbury caused a social media stir when they removed Fudge from their festive selection box and replaced it with a Dairy Milk Oreo, reports Birmingham Live. Cadbury defended the decision, stating it was "to improve the mix and offer more of a variety for our fans". However, many loyal customers were outraged by the change and one consumer declared on X, formerly Twitter, "Christmas is ruined", while another accused Cadbury of waging a "war on Christmas". In response to Cadbury's chocolate selection shake-up, some one demanded "a revolution against this chocolate tyranny". A spokesperson for Cadbury explained: "This year we have updated the range available within our selection boxes to improve the mix and offer more of a variety for our fans." They added: "Cadbury Fudge is still available in our small selection box and Freddo selection box but has been removed from the medium selection box to ensure we're offering choice between the ranges."
