Lisa Nock, 44, was conned out of $22,000 when she was tricked into believing she had struck up a two-year-long online romance with the 46-year-old Bondi Vet star.
The fraudsters used emotionally manipulative messages to convince the pensioner she was in a romantic relationship with the star, she told Melbourne radio hosts Fifi Box, Brendan Fevola, and Nick Cody on Thursday. They first made contact with an 'innocent message' on Instagram while posing as Chris, before moving Lisa to WhatsApp to continue the manipulation. Lisa said she was ultimately conned out of her life savings under false pretences, which included a $12,000 fake hospital bill and a whopping $2000 fee for an in-person meet and greet. 'I was browsing through Instagram, and I was a fan of Bondi Vet but not really a big fan,' Lisa said as she explained how the scam was initiated on 101.9 The Fox's Fifi, Fev & Nick radio show.Lisa received a sudden reply from the blue-tick verified profile which said: 'How long have you been a fan?' 'It all started perfectly innocently, and then he took me over to WhatsApp on a +68 number,' she recalled. 'He said,"Honey, I need your assistance. I need $12,000 to get me out of hospital",' because he was in Africa at the time checking on animals over there.'I said,"I don't have much of an income but I can sponsor you about 20 British pounds a week but that's it", and I carried on doing that until December 2022.' The first red flag that she noticed was when the scammer had proposed a $2000 in-person meet-and-greet.'Apparently, I had to pay $2,000 for a meet-and-greet, and I'm thinking,"Why should I have to pay someone who's asked me to marry him?"' Brendan asked Lisa why she wasn't concerned that a famous TV presenter would find himself stuck in an African hospital in urgent need of $12,000.'There were questions going around in my head like,"Didn't you take out travel insurance or medical insurance?"''I'm not angry, but I would like some answers,' Lisa said. 'To this present day, I still don't know who the scammer was.Lisa told the radio trio that she 'wishes' she could 'say hi' to the real Dr. Chris and tell him, 'Well done for your work with the animals.' It comes just one month after New Zealand grandmother Daana Tomlin, 73, admitted she had been conned out of $786 by an almost identical scam. Daana, a semi-retired naturopath from Dunedin, believed she had been in a five-year-long relationship with a scammer posing as Dr Chris Brown. She said she was conned into sending the scammers almost $800 through gift cards, Apple cards and PayPal.
