Locals in Cessnock, Australia, claim that a 'mountain of rubbish' left by fly-tippers for over a year has left them unable to leave their homes due to rat infestations, fire risks, and embarrassment.

"It is stopping my neighbours from leaving the house, it’s bringing rats, it’s a fire hazard and it’s embarrassing. " Cessnock locals claim that a " mountain of rubbish " outside their building, including mattresses, armchairs and tyres, has been left for "over a year".

Their recent protest on Friday was aimed at housing associations and landlords including Wheatley Homes, which manages some but not all of the properties in the affected area. Street, claiming the fly-tipping has led to rat problems and fire fears, as people have previously attempted to set the pile ablaze.

Tenants claim to have made "countless complaints" of the problem to the housing association, and some residents with additional support needs say they have been "unable to leave the house" due to the piles of rubbish outside the Brand Street block. Locals and Living Rent members staged a protest on Friday at Wheatley's Dava Street offices to demand the area be cleaned.

Liz Wong, a Wheatley tenant, said: “It is stopping my neighbours from leaving the house, it’s bringing rats, it’s a fire hazard and it’s embarrassing. Anne Beattie, who uses a mobility aid, claims she has been unable to leave the house without a carer as a result of the piles of rubbish left outside the building, and says this has taken a toll on her wellbeing.

She said: “Not being able to sit outside or get to the shops has left me with feelings of anxiety, depression and also took me to my sofa or bed not wanting to be in touch with anyone.

"I have gone by weekends without any food until the Sunday when my food from home care is delivered. I have struggled and found it extremely distressing and difficult.

"A Wheatley Homes spokesperson said that it had not received reports of rats, fire-raising or any tenants with additional support needs who were unable to leave their homes due to fly-tipping. They said: “We’re working closely with the council to address fly-tipping and to keep the neighbourhood clean and safe for residents.

“Our teams have been out regularly over the past year to remove items that have been illegally dumped – including two visits in the last week. “We’ve written to our tenants to remind them of the importance of disposing of household and bulk waste responsibly. The council has also put up new signs advising against fly-tipping.

“Any residents with concerns about fly-tipping, or who want to book a bulk uplift, should contact the council. “There have been no reports of rats this year. We are not aware of any concerns about fire-raising or a resident being unable to access their home. ”
