A coroner ruled that a stem cell transplant contributed to the death of 31-year-old Devon Leigh, who was battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The transplant led to complications, including Graft vs Host Disease and post-transplant thrombotic angiopathy, ultimately causing her death.

A young mother battling a rare form of cancer died as a result of complications from a stem cell transplant , a coroner has concluded. Devon Leigh, described by her family as a 'doting mother and partner,' passed away on June 4, 2024, at the age of 31. She was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at 29 and received treatment at Tameside Hospital, including a stem cell donation. An inquest held on January 14th revealed that the transplant led to further complications.

Devon developed Graft vs Host Disease, a condition where the body rejects donated tissue. This, in turn, resulted in post-transplant thrombotic angiopathy, a condition affecting blood and blood vessels. Post-transplant thrombotic angiopathy, alongside multiple organ failure, was listed as the cause of Devon's death. Assistant coroner Zak Golombeck conducted the inquest because the stem cell transplant was an unnatural disease process, despite Devon's initial diagnosis being a naturally occurring medical condition. The court heard that Devon's family declined a proposal for a written inquest and attended Manchester Coroners' Court. The inquest found Devon's cause of death to be 1A post-transplant thrombotic angiopathy, 1B Graft vs Host Disease, 1C Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, and part 2, meaning an underlying factor, 'recurrent infections.' Mr. Golombeck expressed his condolences to Devon's family, acknowledging the significant loss they had endured. Devon's family raised concerns about the condition of the wards where she received care, but Mr. Golombeck explained that inquests cannot investigate every aspect of a patient's hospital journey. He stated that his focus had to be on matters directly contributing to her death. The coroner recorded a narrative conclusion, stating: 'Devon died from recognized complications of necessary medical treatment.' Devon's partner, John Mawdesley, previously paid tribute to her, saying: 'Devon was a truly wonderful person with a loving nature and an infectious personality. She was a doting mother and partner who lit up every room she walked into.
