Manchester City Council is set to approve plans for the redevelopment of Holt Town, a 30-hectare area in eastern Manchester, into a 4,500-home 'green new town'. The project includes a unique feature: the construction of a public lido.

Manchester City Council is poised to approve plans for the redevelopment of Holt Town , a 30-hectare area currently characterized by light industrial buildings and a sparse population. The ambitious project, slated to unfold over several years, envisions transforming Holt Town into a 4,500-home ' green new town ', a pioneering urban development concept for Manchester . The plan centers around the existing Metrolink station, aiming to create a vibrant and connected community.

Key features include a 300-capacity cultural hub, slated to become the new home for Hope Mill Theatre, and 15 acres of green space, including 'confluence park', that will be built around the River Medlock. One of the most intriguing elements of the redevelopment is the proposed construction of a lido, a public swimming pool, on Cyrus Street. This secluded back road, connecting Cavalier Street to Cambrian Street, is currently overgrown and underutilized. The images, published in the council's neighbourhood development framework, offer a glimpse into the potential of this unique addition to Holt Town. Council leader Bev Craig expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, 'Holt Town has huge potential and this is feeding our ambition to create a brand new woodland town – the first of its kind in Manchester.' She further outlined the transformative impact the project could have, stating: 'We have an opportunity to deliver a transformative programme of investment and we expect this area to be Manchester’s next urban regeneration exemplar, creating a neighbourhood that meets the needs of our city and our people – with at least 4,500 new homes, including significant affordable housing options. Following consultation, we are beginning to move to the early delivery phase for Holt Town - a new town within the city of Manchester – that will finally bridge the gap between the city centre, Sportcity and the Etihad Campus in east Manchester.' The future of Holt Town will be discussed at Manchester council’s executive committee on Wednesday, January 22nd at 2pm.
