Discover the enchanting town of Maclean in Australia, a vibrant celebration of Scottish heritage. Explore its history, traditions, and the unique connection that binds this town to Scotland.

Across the globe, Scottish culture and heritage are celebrated. While Scotland 's whisky and the legend of the Loch Ness Monster are globally recognized, certain towns and villages possess deeper historical ties to the country. Following a recent exploration of settlements in Italy and Canada with Scottish connections, we now turn our attention to Australia , specifically the town of Maclean .

Nestled in the Clarence Valley local government area of New South Wales, Maclean is a small town with a population of around 2,700 people. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation has designated Maclean as the 'most Scottish town in Australia', citing a 'combination of history, happenstance, and a little marketing know-how'. Founded in 1862, the town was named after Alexander Grant McLean, the Surveyor General of New South Wales, who hailed from Scotland and arrived in Australia in 1837. A significant portion of Maclean's early settlers originated from the Scottish Highlands, leading to a strong Scottish lineage among the town's current residents. The arrival of Europeans in the region resulted in the displacement of the Aboriginal Yaegl people from their land, confining them to small settlements. Tragically, multiple massacres of Indigenous people occurred along the Clarence River. Despite its modest size, Maclean is renowned for its annual Highland Gathering, a unique event with a history spanning over a century. Held every year across the Easter weekend, the Maclean Highland Gathering attracts athletes competing in traditional contests such as shot put and caber tossing, while bagpiping events highlight the musical facet of the celebration. A pipe band proudly marches down High Street, accompanied by Highland dance competitions. It is not uncommon to witness locals don traditional Scottish attire during the event, with numerous Australians embracing the occasion by sporting kilts in honor of Scotland's heritage.Beyond the Highland Gathering, Maclean celebrates its Scottish roots in various ways. Scattered throughout the town are numerous poles proudly displaying various clan tartans. For those interested in exploring this unique feature, a store in Maclean sells a map detailing the locations of all the tartan poles. The Maclean Scottish Shop also offers a collection of Scotland-themed memorabilia and gifts. Maclean's rich history has even led to the establishment of its own Scottish association, a group formed in the 1980s. Comprised of local residents passionate about preserving the town's Scottish heritage—including its distinctive tartan poles—the association actively promotes and celebrates Scotland's influence on Maclean. Speaking to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Robert McPherson, president of the Maclean Scottish Town of Australia committee, shared: 'We got to 100 poles and I said that was enough because it was all voluntary painted. Then we had people with good reason, who wanted to remember their dad or they had a 100th birthday or whatever, so we started painting again and we got to 240, and I had to put a stop to it because once they are painted you have to maintain them.'
