ICANN Launches New gTLD Application Process, Opening Doors for Custom Domains and Multilingual Internet

ICANN has initiated a new application round for generic top-level domains (gTLDs), aiming to provide businesses and communities with tailored domain names and promote a more inclusive, multilingual internet. The process, which comes with a $227,000 fee and a lengthy timeline, offers opportunities for branding and digital identity but also presents challenges for applicants.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers ( ICANN ) has launched a new application process for generic top-level domains (gTLDs), marking its first such initiative since 2012.

The move comes as the internet continues to evolve, with the need for more diverse and inclusive domain names becoming increasingly apparent. When the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) first introduced the concept of domain names, the only top-level domain in existence was .arpa, a reflection of the internet's origins at the USA’s Advanced Research Projects Agency. As the internet grew, it became clear that a single domain was insufficient to meet the needs of a global user base.

Pioneers like Jon Postel and Tim Reynolds recognized the need for broader categories, proposing domains like ‘government’, ‘education’, or ‘commercial’ to provide organizations with names free of undesirable semantics. Over the years, the governance of the internet's domain name system (DNS) has become more complex, leading to the creation of ICANN, which now oversees the DNS root zone. The early 2000s saw the first dotcom boom, prompting ICANN to introduce new gTLDs such as .biz, .info, .name, and .pro.

These were followed by both unsponsored gTLDs, like .museum, and sponsored ones, such as .travel, which were seen as necessary additions to the internet's infrastructure. The 2012 application round was a significant milestone, allowing for domains in non-Latin scripts and custom or vanity domains. This process resulted in a surge of applications, with many corporations securing gTLDs that included their names or related terms, such as Oracle’s .java.

Registries also proposed numerous gTLDs, hoping to attract customers who valued specific domain strings. Some of these, like the controversial .sucks, were met with skepticism, as they often became targets for brands seeking to prevent third parties from registering domains that could harm their reputation. ICANN describes the current application round as an opportunity for businesses, communities, and others to apply for new top-level domains tailored to their specific needs.

These domains can serve as branding opportunities, offering businesses in various sectors or niche markets a unique label on the internet. Additionally, ICANN views this round as a chance to foster a more multilingual internet, catering to the billions of people who speak and write in different languages and scripts but are not yet online.

However, the process is not without its challenges. Applicants must pay a hefty $227,000 application fee by August 12th and may have to wait until 2030 for the process to conclude. Despite these hurdles, the potential benefits of securing a custom gTLD are significant, offering businesses and communities a chance to carve out a distinct identity in the digital landscape
