The soaps have a real opportunity to showcase happy and long-term LGBTQ+ couples ‘A happy couple in a soap? Are you mad?’ I imagine that was your first thought when reading the headline of this piece. If so, you make a fair point. Soaps have something of a reputation for destroying their mainstays’ happiness to facilitate long-running storylines or sacrificing relationships for a dramatic affair. I fully understand the reasons why.
Arthur and Marshall’s romance ended in heartbreak Coronation Street’s Paul Foreman sadly died last year after a diagnosis of motor neurone disease – less than a year after he and Billy tied the knot in the first ever gay wedding on the cobbles. And Hollyoaks killed off James Nightingale, which left husband Ste devastated and alone when he woke from a year long coma to find out about his other half’s tragic fate.
