After days of speculation, Jude McAtamney has been released by the New York Giants following their implosion against the Denver Broncos last Sunday. The Swatragh native missed two kicks in their 33-32 defeat at Denver with the Giants conceding 33 points in a disastrous fourth quarter with McAtamney coming under fire on social media in the immediate aftermath.
Speaking to the New York Post after the game, McAtamney stated: “It's on me. I missed vital points at vital times today. I'm not gonna shy away from that. 'The snap and the hold was good. It was my lack of execution on the kicks. I’m not gonna shy away from my mistakes and letting the team down.' The 25-year-old was elevated from the practice squad after regular kicker Graham Gano got injured and he has played four times in the NFL. He featured against the LA Charges and the New Orleans Saints before being signed to the 53-man first team squad ahead of their clash with the reigning Super Bowl champions the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants claimed a memorable 34-17 win over their divisional rivals with McAtamney making four out of five attempts. Yet, the life of a kicker in the NFL is unforgiving with the conversation rate around 95 per cent and Sunday’s performance sealed his fate. The former Derry U20 star remains eligible to return to the Giants’ practise squad, but his future with the organisation is unclear. McAtamney won an Ulster U20 title in 2020 with the Oak Leafers before pursuing his NFL dream. He started off with Rutgers University before joining the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2024. He made his NFL debut last November against the Washington Commanders and kicked an extra point and a 31-yard field goal.
