Olive Restaurant in Bury responds to a negative review from food influencer Just Jack TV, who criticized the food and food hygiene rating. The owner, Mark Kenyon, acknowledges some issues raised but highlights the restaurant's efforts to improve and the positive feedback from regular customers.
The owners of a Bury restaurant have responded to an online review from an influencer who said their food ‘smelt like dog ****’, and made light of a recent food hygiene inspection. Based on Hall Street in Walshaw , Olive Restaurant and Wine Bar has been run by Mark Kenyon and his daughter Olivia for the past two years, having recently undergone a major refurbishment which opened last summer after being closed for nine months.
The Mediterranean-themed restaurant and wine bar serves a range of tapas and meat dishes, as well as pizzas, sandwiches, burgers, and breakfast dishes which can also be ordered to takeaway. Last week, popular food influencer Just Jack TV shared a video of a recent visit to Olive, where he ordered a portion of salt and pepper chips, bacon and maple syrup pancakes, and a margarita pizza. In the video, he said the pancakes ‘smell like dog s***’, whilst criticising the pizza for looking ‘like it’s got cheap ingredients’. In the video , the content creator, who has over 21,000 followers on TikTok alone, said the pizza had ‘a good crunch’, but that it featured the 'worst homemade marinara I've tried'. Citing a lack of flavouring in the chips, he then said the pancakes looked ‘like they’ve rushed it’. Attempting to eat some of the pancake brunch dish, he then said: “I'm not eating that, it's the pancake that tastes awful.” He added: 'It's not cooked, and all the flavour you're getting is burnt. Genuinely the smell and the taste is disgusting. I'm being quite kind.” The video forms part of a wider series where the influencer visits a number of low-rated takeaways and restaurants across the country, before giving them his own verdict. He gave Olive a 2.5 rating out of ten. Many of the restaurant’s regular customers responded to the video online to say they had enjoyed ‘really good’ food and ‘excellent’ service there. One person said: 'Keep doing what your going guys. The food taste great and the place looks stunning.' Another said: 'We visit you guys a lot and have been mid week, weekends, special occasions, the food and service has always been excellent.' One other said: 'We love it there. We did bottomless brunch in December for 14 people its was fabulous, food lovely, staff really polite and attentive and would definitely recommend the Olive.' Speaking to the MEN, Mark said he and his staff were upset to hear the influencer’s verdict on their food upon watching the video. “At the end of the day, everybody’s got their own opinion,” he said. “You can’t please everyone and we respect that. He’s obviously done well out of the video, it’s got a big reaction but there’s another side to the story he didn’t get to know. 'I wish he had come in and spoke to us. We’re on the up, we’re really trying to establish ourselves, so it’s a bit of a bite in the ass that we didn’t need, to be honest with you. Sure, it’s exposure, but at what cost.” The reason JustJackTV had visited the Olive restaurant in the first place was as part of an on-going series of videos where he visits some of the lowest-rated takeaways and restaurants across the country, before giving them his own verdict. In the creators verdict, he gave the Tottington venue a 2.5 score out of ten, whilst acknowledging it had a zero food hygiene rating. “Look, there was an issue,” Mark said, addressing the food hygiene rating. “We had some issues with the kitchen brigade six months ago, the inspectors came in and it wasn’t right on the day. We had a couple of issues to resolve the issues, they revisited, came back and let us stay open. They would not have let us stay open if we hadn’t dealt with it and taken things on board. We take responsibility for what happened, we have changed things, we have changed the team, and we’ve been trading merrily since then.” Mark says the venue is not due for a reinspection until April, when he hopes they will be officially recognised for their attempts to improve on what they are doing. “We have served thousands of people since October,” Mark added. “We cooked for more than 2,000 people at Christmas . We were full for Mother’s Day. We’ve never had anything come back to the kitchen. Whilst Mark says he disagrees with a lot of what the content creator said in his video, there are some points he agrees with. “He probably had a bit of a point with the pancake, it didn’t look right” he explained. “We’ve served so many pizzas with our own marinara sauce and never had any complaints, it’s made fresh and it gets a lot of praise. Perhaps it wasn’t right on the day, or it just wasn't to his taste. “It’s given us a chance to look at maybe how we can improve things, as well as our takeaway options and how best to serve things. We’re all for learning. We’re a family-run business, we have 14 staff that rely on us every week and they felt quite hurt by the video.” Mark says that since the video has been uploaded, the restaurant has been inundated with messages from regulars who have been praising them for their food and what they are doing in Walshaw. “I don’t think anybody will ever be able to serve perfection 100% of the time,” he says. “But we’re moving in the right direction and people can see all of the things we’re doing to make it better. “We’re very proud of what we’ve been able to do and how we’ve taken it. The support from people has been amazing, people have been telling us how much they love what we do. That’s been really nice to see. We’re trying to turn over a new leaf, and I think we’re doing that.” Olive Restaurant and Wine Bar is on 12-14 Hall St, Walshaw, Tottington, Bury BL8 3BD.
