Workers at Capita , a major outsourcing company in Manchester, are set to launch a strike today, establishing picket lines in the city center. The strike action, spearheaded by the Unite union, stems from a dispute concerning Capita 's alleged refusal to negotiate a pay award for 2024. The industrial action is planned to continue until February 5th.Unite alleges that Capita employees were entitled to a 2024 pay award last April.
The union claims Capita postponed annual pay talks with them, assuring workers of a pay rise in October. However, this promise has not been fulfilled, according to Unite, despite the business reporting profits and a healthy financial position. In December 2023, workers at the two Capita sites voted overwhelmingly in favor of strike action. This latest industrial action follows Capita's decision to deny their employees a pay increase, Unite stated.The dispute involves approximately 1,000 employees across two Capita sites in Manchester and Glasgow, Scotland. Picket lines are expected at Broadhurst House on Oxford Street in Manchester and in Glasgow. Unite general secretary, Sharon Graham, emphasized that Capita has the financial capacity to provide its workers with a fair pay raise but has cynically opted not to in pursuit of increased profits. Graham asserted that Unite members at Capita are resolute in their demand for fair compensation. Unite national officer, Dominic Hook, criticized Capita's lack of engagement in negotiations, stating that the company has had ample time to discuss a fair pay deal for 2024 with the union. Hook warned that Capita's inaction would lead to delays and disruptions for their contract with Royal London. He pointed out that Capita provides technology and outsourcing services to the financial services company, and the strike action will inevitably impact their operations.
