The families of two murdered police officers have welcomed a new national bravery award - but say their campaign for further recognition goes on. George Taylor , 27, was killed by Robert Mone and Thomas McCulloch in 1976 after they broke out of the State Hospital at Carstairs , having murdered a nurse and a patient. Ross Hunt , 56, was stabbed to death by three members of the same family in Larkhall , Lanarkshire , in 1983. while helping colleagues make an arrest.

The Elizabeth Emblem - named after the late Queen - will be given to all emergency service workers and public servants who have died in the line of duty. The Taylor and Hunt families will received the new award later this year and are expected to be among the first recipients. But they believe both men are entitled to a variety of other awards, including the George Medal, Queen’s Commendation for Bravery and Queens Gallantry Medal. They say the medals should have been awarded at the time but both men’s heroism was overlooked by the authoritie
