Thieves made off with 100,000 organic eggs worth over $40,000 from a wholesaler's warehouse in Greencastle, Pennsylvania. The theft occurred over the weekend amid a national egg shortage caused by the bird flu, which is forcing farmers to slaughter millions of chickens monthly. The rising egg prices have more than doubled since the summer of 2023, making the stolen goods highly valuable on the black market.
State Trooper Megan Frazer, who has been on duty for a dozen years, stated that this is the first time she's encountered an egg theft of this magnitude. The only comparable incident she recalls happened ten years ago when a trailer full of chickens was stolen. The thieves broke into a trailer at Pete and Gerry's Organics warehouse just before 9 pm on Saturday. The warehouse is located approximately 65 miles southwest of Harrisburg and 170 miles west of Philadelphia. The theft highlights the severity of the egg shortage impacting the nation, with the average cost of a dozen eggs reaching $5.29 in late January, more than 50% higher than last year. This price surge is affecting consumers both at grocery stores and restaurants. The famous breakfast chain Waffle House, which annually serves over 272 million eggs, has implemented a 50-cent surcharge for each egg ordered. Authorities are investigating the crime and seeking the public's help in identifying the perpetrators.
