A beloved 120-year-old oak tree in Wivenhoe, Essex, known as the Old King George oak, is set to be chopped down despite a four-year campaign by local residents to save it. The decision was made after a dispute between the Wivenhoe Town Council and insurers, who deemed the tree a risk due to ground subsidence.

Councillors have not confirmed when the felling would take place, fearing attempts to thwart it would endanger public safety. "It's been there a lot longer than the houses, a lot longer than the car park and it doesn't deserve this."Mr Boon added: "It shows how much the tree is loved and an alternative could be easily made to having it cut down."Fellow campaigner Philip George warned the decision would also impact wildlife including birds and squirrels.
