Matt Farah reviews the 2025 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Hybrid on a first drive in Spain. The new T-Hybrid system only improves the 992-generation 911 as a daily.
No one likes the word 'hybrid' applied to a 911 — not even Porsche. They tell me the “T-Hybrid” sticker applied where you would normally read 'Carrera GTS' on the doors is for legal reasons in certain countries, so emergency workers know the car carries a high-voltage power system. But calling it a hybrid, whether you’re a fan of sports cars like me, or a fan of the company that makes them, does the new 992-and-a-half-generation Porsche 911 Carrera GTS a disservice.
The other e-motor is inside the turbocharger, between the two windmills, sucking in energy every time exhaust flows through the turbo — which, because Porsche eliminated the waste gate, is always. When asked, it fires that energy back out, producing full boost from idle. I say “the” turbocharger, because for the first time since 1994, this 911 only has one. When you can spool one big turbo faster than you can spool two small turbos, the need for the second one goes away entirely.
