Are there advanced alien “supercivilizations” lurking in our galaxy? If there are, they may use massive megastructures, such as a “ Dyson sphere,” to harvest solar energy directly from a star. As first reported in the, a new study of millions of stars revealed 60 that displayed an excess of infrared heat—a characteristic of blocking a star's light.
Is this a smoking gun for the so-called Dyson spheres? No—just the possibility of them. It's essentially a checklist of stars to study further, using public data, and an early attempt to find an excellent way to search for signs of life in the cosmos.Coined as a concept by physicist Freeman Dyson in 1960, a Dyson sphere is a speculative concept of what an advanced civilization’s power plant might look like.
It’s thought that searching for these kinds of structures—called technosignatures—could be a good way of identifying alien civilizations at great distances, mainly by analyzing starlight for anomalies. The search is based on the concept that a star with a Dyson sphere around it will emit more infrared light, as heat, than its brightness suggests.
