Preparing for going back to school can take up a lot of headspace. Buying new uniform, realising the school shoes you bought at Easter have been outgrown already, preparing for early starts and school runs... But if you have a SEND child – perhaps they're autistic or have ADHD – then it can feel even more stressful.

1. Establish a predictable routine We know that routine is important to SEND children. They can find relief in knowing what to expect at any given time in their schedule.'This could include waking up at the same time, having regular mealtimes, and setting a consistent bedtime. A predictable schedule helps reduce anxiety and allows children to feel more in control,' she says.

'This can boost your child’s confidence,' she says. 'Discuss strategies for managing social challenges, like finding a quiet space if they feel overwhelmed or using an stress-relief tool. 'This space should be free from distractions, filled with comforting items like soft pillows, weighted blankets, or their favourite books,' she says.

'You may wish to use a reward system to acknowledge accomplishments or simply remind them how well they are doing.
