Australia has become a bitterly divided nation where economic optimism has collapsed and Gen Z and Millennials are deeply distrustful of government.
More than three-quarters of Australians say they would refuse to help someone who strongly disagreed with their views, as public trust declines and the country becomes increasingly polarised,This year’s data finds that almost half of Australians believe the nation is more divided today than in the past, however business has emerged as a key institution that could help bridge the divide.
Government suffered the largest fall, a seven point decline to fall into “distrust” for the first time since 2020, despite the authors expecting the change in federal government may help stabilise trust levels.
“Government has seen the biggest decline in trust among the Australian institutions this year. A lot of that is being driven by younger generations, particularly Gen Z.”Australia is straddling the boundary between “moderately polarised” and “in danger of severe polarisation”, alongside Canada, according to the survey.
