11% of younger people admit the mistake has landed them in hospital
Nearly eight in 10 Gen Z believe it’s “normal” or “acceptable” to get sunburnt on holiday, according to new research by Well Pharmacy reveals. Almost a third of the 18 to 24-year-olds polled said a “bit of sunburn is fine” while away, and nearly two in 10 said red skin was okay because it “browns eventually”.
More than half of Brits aged 55 and over said sunburn on holiday was “unacceptable”, with 42% ensuring they never get burned, and 12% getting annoyed if they miss a spot with the sun cream. "Severe sunburns with fever, chills, blistering, or dizziness require immediate medical care, as intense burns can affect electrolyte and fluid balance throughout the body. An annual skin check by a dermatologist is advisable for anyone with a history of sunburns.
Often people do not feel the full effects of sunburn for several hours after exposure - this can be particularly problematic when in the sea or a swimming pool because the water cools the body.Preventing sunburn Studies show that the majority of people don’t apply enough sunscreen with the amount needed for the body of an average adult to achieve the stated sun protection factor being around 35ml or 6 to 8 teaspoons of lotion.
