“Innocent people using e-bikes often fall victim of theft by individuals who are intent to use them to assist their criminal activity'
They can be annoying and dangerous when zipping past illegally on a pavement. And according to police, they have now become part of criminals' armoury.
E-scooters can only be used on the road and in cycle lanes in trial areas designated by the government and these vehicles are ones for rent only. They have insurance as part of the rental agreement. Salford is one of the trial areas. The maximum speed for an e-scooter is 15.5mph.It is not currently possible to get insurance for privately owned e-scooters, which means it is illegal to use them on the road or in public spaces.
Detective Chief Inspector Rob McLoughlin said: “Should you be caught illegally using an e-vehicle, or stealing and selling them on, you will have a criminal record which will affect you in future. In recent months we have made a number of arrests and seizures of e-bikes and e-scooters being used illegally in Cheshire. Over the summer months, we will continue to patrol open spaces and provide a visible presence.
Police recommend e-bikes and e-scooters should be fitted with a lock when not in use and stored securely, and have a tracking device fitted. They have also warned people should be vigilant for any markings left on their home - a sign the e-scooter has been seen by thieves.
