A parcel sent to Harry Durose contained a substance estimated to have caused 75,000 deaths in the US in 2022
Harry Durose had been through some terrible times. His young life had been blighted by drugs and mental health problems, but he was beginning to talk about his future.
He believed he was purchasing the tranquiliser alprazolam, often referred to by the trade name Xanax, but blood tests following his death showed the presence of nitazenes, an illegal and deadly synthetic opioid which has been linked to dozens of deaths across the UK. A 'nationwide' investigation into importation of nitazenes is continuing. A 'label' on the package suggested it had come from Birmingham once it had been smuggled from China, said the officer
In December last year, it was reported that 30 overdose fatalities in Birmingham were being examined for the involvement of nitazenes and the sedative xylazine, after a coroner concluded nitazenes were the primary cause of death of two drug addicts in one night at a hostel in the city. The witness said Harry had revealed he had a 'following' of people on Snapchat who would pay him and watch him take drugs live.
His mother Naomi Durose cried in court as she described her son: "He was lovely. He was such a sweet, caring boy." Mrs Durose said her son had struggled with his mental health 'for as long as I can remember', adding that although he had tests he was never formally diagnosed with autism. Becoming upset, she said: "The last thing he said to me was 'I will speak to you in the morning'. When I rang him the next morning his phone was off."
Manchester South Area Coroner Chris Morris said the death had been a 'tragedy', adding: "Harry has been described in court as a very loving, caring young man. He was obviously someone who was fiercely intelligent, very interesting and I get the sense that in his own unique way was quite quirky as well. Harry was also clearly a very complex person with more than his fair share of troubles.
