The most romantic day of the year is upon us and today, many across the city and beyond will be celebrating with the ones they love for Valentine's Day. Taking place on February 14 every year, the name of the day is inspired by St Valentine - but the tradition of marking a day for love is said to go back hundreds of years to a Roman Festival. Looking back at past celebrations, we can see everything from local businesses to weddings, school children celebrating and more.
Courtesy of our archives, Mirrorpix, you can see a glimpse into how life used to be across the city in years gone by. A number of photos also show the days in the lead up to Valentine's Day celebrations which we love. You may also spot images of British Rail staff, June Stonehouse and Ronnie Stock at Moorfields Station, Old Hall Street, Liverpool, with their special message for commuters: 'If the postman missed you, we still love you!' We also see a heartwarming moment between Chrissie Clarke of Walton and dale milkman Alan Woods, and a young Daniel Whittle asking Paula Williams to be his Valentine.
