This article explores the experience of dining at U N I, a long-standing Indian restaurant in Liverpool, highlighting its classic curry house offerings and the enduring appeal of this type of cuisine.

There's a lot to be said for the traditional Anglo-Indian curry house . Poppadoms with chutney followed by a balti or masala - nothing says 'comfort food' quite like it. In recent years, we've seen the rise of restaurants such as Mowgli and Bundobust, whose selling point is authentic Indian food. And while I believe these places are conceptually brilliant in their own right, the curry house is fusion food at its best. Curry houses are widespread across the country, and Liverpool is no exception.

Last week, I put one of the city's oldest Indian restaurants to the test, to see what it was like. U N I on Renshaw Street has been open since 1970. Loyal customers will argue that they serve up the best Indian meals in the city, while much debate surrounds the pronunciation of its name; is it pronounced 'You – n – Eye” or “Yuni”? For years, it has served up everything from classic curries to tandoori dishes, house specials and more. Today, you can also order takeaways and delivery from the business. While U N I's exterior might look simple, its interior is anything but. Inside is a warm, long but narrow dining area filled with curtained booths as well as larger tables for bigger groups. Its fairly large size is a surprise to anyone looking at the restaurant from the street - almost like the TARDIS, albeit one filled with the aroma of spices, South Asian décor, and regional music. The staff at U N I are accommodating; we'd decided the Saturday in between Christmas and New Year was a good time to try to eat without a booking but, despite the restaurant seemingly full, they managed to find us a booth. Ordering is straightforward and casual, quite like the menu - but that's not a criticism. Two substantial poppadoms were served with the usual assortment and chutneys; mint yoghurt, mango chutney, onion chutney and lime pickl
