Regan Tierney's family reported 'threats to kill' from Daniel Patten a year before he stabbed her to death, jurors were told
It took police officers six days to follow up with the family of a young mum after her abusive ex-partner threatened to ‘stab’ them and ‘drive his car into’ their house, an inquest has heard.
The court heard how Shannon dialled 999 in the early hours of April 22, 2018, after an argument broke out between her and Patten. Shannon told the call handler that Patten had threatened to ‘stab’ her, her partner, and their child, after they had spotted him out when he had told Regan he was staying in.
But it wasn’t until April 28 that two police officers visited Shannon’s house. Sergeant Claire Bailey and Detective Constable John Morris were working as response officers at the time, and told the court they had been asked to attend a ‘concern for welfare’ at Shannon’s house following the dropped 999 call.
When asked by Coroner Peter Sigee over whether she may have had more ‘professional curiosity’ about the details of Patten’s relationship with Regan’s family had she known of the history of domestic abuse, PS Bailey said: “Definitely. If I had been aware of this information when I went to see Regan I would have asked different questions”.
