With the loss of 500 breeding pairs a year, many experts agree that the African penguin could well be extinct in the wild by 2035

‘African penguins have so much patience for their own partners and they can teach humans so many different things,’ sasy Shanet Rutger, pictured at Two Oceans Aquarium

Her job involves caring for and feeding African penguins in the aquarium and educating visitors about the birds and their struggle for continued survival in the wild. The Cape Town public can also go and see the species outside captivity with relative ease, which is part of its problem.. The sheer number of penguins there means casual observers could be forgiven for thinking they are thriving as a species. But, Rutger says, the colony, like all others along the coastline, is actually struggling.

But the main threat is the fishing industry. Large-scale fishing of sardines – penguins’ prime food source – in the surrounding waters of the South African Cape has forced the birds to head further out into the ocean looking for food.
