Stellar acting work suffocated in style.

) as Calum, a single father of 11-year-old Sophie , and the film isn't so much about him but a portrait of their unique father-daughter relationship, and adult Sophie's attempts to reconcile her memories of her father with the man he was.pivots between past and present, recall and fact, with stylistic aplomb.

Mescal shines as Calum, bringing a quiet depth and deep well of anger that you know is lingering beneath his often still waters. Corio plays beautifully against Mescal, her sharp childlike frankness a balm to the:"Being a dad is the thing that [Calum] loves being the most in the world." This comes through in the film, and it's refreshing to see a portrait of fatherhood that doesn't rest on narrative clichés.

Plenty of films thrive on ambiguity — whether that's within the story itself, its conclusion, or the motivations of its characters — butleaves slightly too much up to the imagination. This is likely due to the framework that we learn of much later on: that adult Sophie is watching the videos of her holiday on her own birthday.

The lapse in accuracy and the dreamlike way we move from scene to scene is justified by this lens, but we're never grounded enough in either the past or the present to feel truly connected to the uncovering of events which takes place mostly chronologically. This halfway house between linear disconnect and straightforward storytelling results in something muddied rather than wondrous.
