Homewood boys knock off Spartans while Mountain Brook girls beat two-time defending champion Patriots.
The top-ranked Homewood boys soccer team darted out to large lead in the second half against No. 2 Mountain Brook and fought off a late rally to capture a 3-1 victory over the Spartans in Tuesday’s Class 6A playoff match at Waldrop Stadium in Homewood.
“It was all about the mentality that we had in the locker room beforehand,” Malone said. “We wanted it so bad before the game and just knew we were going to win before the kickoff.” The match got a bit testy as both teams were served a yellow card before earning a second following a shoving match between a goaltender and offensive player.
Lily scored her first goal in the 27 minute of the opening half and the 12-3-4 Spartans carried a 1-0 lead into the break. It took only 11 minutes into the second for Lily to add her second goal and she earned the hat trick with 18 minutes left in the match.
