Michael felt he had exhausted all options to treat the severe depression and anxiety he developed during his time in the air force. Now, the announcement from Australia's medicine regulator to approve some psychedelics has given him hope.
In March 2022, mental health charity Mind Medicine Australia applied to the TGA to change the psilocybin from a prohibited schedule 9 drug to a controlled schedule 8 drug.
Mind Medication Australia co-founder Peter Hunt told ABC Hobart breakfast the charity's application had 12,000 submissions from doctors and the public. From July first, when the changes come into affect, psychiatrists will be able to prescribe psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression and methylenedioxymethamphetamine for post-traumatic stress disorder.

‘Long term monitoring’ a requirement for TGA approved psychedelic drug useOne of the conditions for TGA approved use of psychedelic drugs to treat mental health is “long term monitoring”, says Brain & Mind Centre Co-Director Professor Ian Hickie. “Whoever gets these substances, the doctor who prescribes, or the clinic who provides it, will be responsible for reporting to the TGA what actually happens,” Mr Hickie told Sky News Australia. “That again is a very welcome development. “We simply need to know – not just is there short term benefit, but is there any long term harm.”

TGA’s approval of MDMA and Psilocybin for medical use is a result of ‘renewed interest’Neuromedicines Discovery Centre Deputy Director Professor Chris Langmead says the Therapeutics Goods Administration’s recent approval for MDMA and Psilocybin is a result of a “renewed interest”. “There has been a renewed interest in looking at substances such as MDMA and psilocybin for many years - in fact, much work was done in the 1960s,” he told Sky News Australia. “But it really is only in the last two or three or four years that there’s been significantly large clinical trials that have studied the effectiveness of MDMA when used combined with psychotherapy for the treatment of PTSD. “Or psilocybin when combined with psychotherapy for the treatment of very difficult to treat depression. “It is the large amount of emerging clinical data around the safety and the effectiveness of these medicines when used under very strictly controlled clinical conditions that has led the TGA to make this decision.”

MDMA and psilocybin recently approved for medical useThe Therapeutic Goods Administration recently approved MDMA and psilocybin to treat mental illnesses. “For the treatment of PTSD in the case of MDMA, and for the treatment of treatment-resistant depression in the case of psilocybin, these medicines will be reclassified as schedule eight, which means they are controlled drugs,” Neuromedicines Discovery Centre Deputy Director Professor Chris Langmead said. “They’ll be able to be used in a clinical context in the same way, for example, that ketamine or other opioid analgesics are used in an operating theatre,” he told Sky News Australia.
