A viral TikTok cleaning hack for air fryers is being warned against by experts due to the risk of fire. Method, a household cleaning brand, advises against using soapy water and recommends a safe cleaning guide to maintain your air fryer's functionality.

Air fryer users are being warned against a 'dangerous' cleaning hack that went viral on TikTok. Last year, a hack that encouraged users to fill the base of their air fryer with soapy water and then turn it on to clean it, reportedly caused the kitchen appliance to catch fire. Experts were quick to warn consumers against the 'unsafe cleaning method', with Which? even taking to Instagram - calling it “the dumbest way to clean your air fryer and burn down your house.

” Household cleaning brand method strongly advises against this risky practice and has now compiled an easy-to-follow cleaning guide to ensure these popular gadgets maintain their new, fresh appliance glow – with a safe clean. To keep your air fryer in tip-top condition, we recommend cleaning the basket or draw after every single use. This will avoid any oil, grease and grime setting in as it will be much harder to clean the basket if you have to scrub hard food residue away. Without cleaning after each use, small crumbs and grime can burn during the next time you cook - leaving your food with an unpleasant taste - yuck! Start by removing the basket and the tray and fill your sink with warm water. Squirt a generous amount of a gentle washing-up liquid, such as method’s washing-up liquid in green tea and citrus. Citrus is a great cleaning ingredient as it contains acid, oils and enzymes that can soften the build up of food. This product is known for its powerful and biodegradable ingredients and will leave your air fryer dazzling and spotless. Allowing the parts to soak for 10–15 minutes will loosen any grease and residue, making it easier to scrub away any food stains. Next, take a sponge or soft-bristle brush, and scrub down the tray and basket before rinsing again. Then take each part and dry it with a clean towel. Make sure both parts are completely dry before re-using them, as moisture can damage the appliance – and water and electricity don’t mix well! If grease has accumulated on the heating element, turn the air fryer upside down for easier access. Don’t forget about the interior of the air fryer! Using a damp cloth, give the interior a thorough wipe down. For an extra boost, opt for gentle surface cleaning spray which will help budge those stubborn stains. The exterior of the air fryer also collects dust, fingerprints, and grease, so it is important to take a cloth and wipe the exterior, paying special attention to buttons and the control panel. Avoid spraying cleaner directly onto electronic components to prevent damage. Once the air fryer and all its parts are clean, allow them to air dry completely or wipe them with a clean towel before reassembling. Depending on how often you use your air fryer, it is a good idea to give it a deep clean every couple of weeks, as regular care will ensure it stays in tip-top condition and ready to deliver delicious meals. We also suggest avoiding putting the air fryer basket and tray in the dishwasher as the high heat can damage the non-stick coating on the basket
