Police diverted the group, which was expected to number around 70, away from protestors who had gathered close to St Alphonsus Catholic church on London Road in Calton.

He said: “It was like a Mexican stand-off and both sides stood fast. Unfortunately, we hadn’t been told about it. We opened, and within half an hour a lot of people descended, police descended.“Our café was full, and we were told by the police that things might kick off, with us right in the middle of it all. They said that, for the safety of our customers and staff, be ready to pull the shutters down and be prepared for the worst of it.
