Senior English teacher Katylyn Kuchta speaks at the Akron Public Schools board meeting on Monday, May 20 ahead of the board’s vote to cut 285 jobs.AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Public Schools voted to eliminate 285 jobs, which will save the district approximately $24 million, Monday night during a board meeting that spanned more than four hours.
Of the jobs to be cut, 121.5 will be absorbed through attrition. Fifty-two current teachers will lose their jobs, along with eight administrators and additional staff., to voice their concerns about how the budget cuts will impact students and staff. Employees who were on the list to lose their jobs were notified last week. The district will now send them official notices.
“As my team engaged in a current review of the staffing levels and decreasing enrollment numbers, it was apparent that this would not be enough. We needed additional cost savings to lessen the impact of any future budget reductions,” Robinson said.
