The veteran Shamrock Rovers goalkeeper will bring the curtain down on his glittering career this Friday night
When Alan Mannus was embarking on his career at Linfield, never did he imagine that one day he would be representing his country or playing against Juventus and AC Milan in Europe.
His honours include six League of Ireland titles, five Irish Leagues, four IFA Cups, and FAI Cup and a Scottish Cup, two Irish League Cups, two Setanta Cups, four County Antrim Shields and a President’s Cup. “The European games, I love them the most, playing against Del Piero, Ibrahimovic, Donnaruma. Who am I to ever get the chance to play against people like that?
"That is no criticism of Alan - he has served the club tremendously well, but I've got to look at the possibility of signing another goalkeeper for next season. " “It was different for me, different league, different training, different people, different supporters, so I didn’t know how it would go, but I was never one to shy away from a challenge.Reflecting on his decision to finally retire, Mannus said: “Last year was going to be my last but I felt my performances were good and I really enjoyed Europe. I said I'd regret it more if I finished after how I felt last year went.
“I’ve won the league with clubs and I’ve won cups but the one thing I missed out on was getting to the group stages, it was something that I wanted to do.”
