Aldi has retained its title as Britain's most affordable supermarket for the second consecutive year, according to a Which? study. The German budget retailer consistently offered the lowest prices for groceries throughout 2024, beating its rival Lidl into second place. Which? tracked thousands of grocery prices across major UK supermarkets, revealing that shoppers could save up to £393 per year by shopping at Aldi compared to the priciest supermarket, Waitrose.

The organisation also found shoppers who regularly stocked up at Aldi could save a whopping £393 a year compared to the priciest contender on the list. The results published on Sunday showed Aldi remained the cheapest supermarket in all 12 months of the year for a smaller shopping list of 56 groceries
The list of 56 items analysed by Which? in December included both branded and own-brand items, such as Birds Eye peas, Hovis bread, milk and butter Asda was the cheapest supermarket for a larger trolley for nine months of the year, but it has been facing a strong challenge from Tesco Clubcard prices, which have made Tesco cheaper in three out of seven months since Which? began including loyalty prices in its analysis from June 2024.
