The state’s hands free driving law is now in place, but one agency says you still have some time to kick the habit before they hit you with a ticket.

) - Distracted drivers listen up! Your bad habit could now cost you.

“Distracted driving is really one of the issues now because of how technology has become such a part of our everyday lives,” said Sergeant Jeremy Burkett with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.According to ALEA, more than 1,800 distracted driving crashes happened in 2020 and more than 1,900 in 2019.“When they get in the motor vehicle and they get behind that wheel, we want them focused on the task of driving. So this is what we feel like the law allows us to do,” said Burkett.

The law is in effect now, but Burkett says you still have time to fall in line before they write you a ticket. “If individuals are observed, they can still be stopped and issued a warning, so that’s kind of like an educational period, but the actual citation enforcement period for us will begin on the 15th,” Burkett said.“On the first offense, the fine can be up to $50 and then 1 point can be put on the license. For the second or subsequence offense, then it could be a $100 fine, two points on the license.

Distracted driving is something impacting the entire country. According to the latest report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2020 more than 3,000 people died from distracted driving and more than 300,000 were injured.
