The former SNP leader delivered a savage verdict of his ex party ahead of their annual conference.

Alex Salmond has accused the SNP leadership of being “brain dead” and lacking “fight” to secure independence. The former First Minister also dismissed SNP Cabinet Secretary Angus Robertson as a “fud” after he met an Israeli diplomat.

He told Scotland on Sunday: "It's not the lack of progress that demoralises people. It's the lack of any strategy. It's not the winning and losing, it's the lack of fight. He said of the loss of party members and the ongoing police investigation into SNP finances: "I don't think most people say 'I'm not going to be a member of the SNP because of Operation Branchform'. They don't want to be a member of the SNP because they don't think the SNP are trying to get independence. I would have thought that you would want some fairly radical shifts to change that.

He also damned Swinney with faint praise: “The Scottish National Party must only elect people who are capable of leading it to independence.
