The NT's new CLP government has promised to curb soaring crime with tougher laws and enforcement. But the manager of an Alice Springs shopping centre has found pulling back on security, instead of increasing it, has worked better.
Alice Springs organisations are using and advocating for alternative approaches to reduce crime, as the NT's new CLP government pledges to toughen crime laws.
"So that has actually had a major positive effect on our crime statistics, it's actually come right down."Some suggested bringing in dogs, and I said 'no, that's all been done before to death, let's try something different, let's fight fire with fire'." "The security guard couldn't handle it. When we came in they went from yelling to talking, and we walked them outside," Mr Anderson said.Mr Melky, who is also a long-time Alice Springs town councillor and former CLP member, thinks the new government should consider solutions like the Plaza's.
Ms Ah Chee said Congress also wants a mandatory treatment facility for men perpetrating domestic violence, before or after prison."We'd want to see this male cultural place being able to incorporate male cultural leadership and therapeutic trauma-informed and healing-focused care, and behaviour-change programs."
