The exact cause of the grounding remains unknown, but it is understood the ship collided with the reef.Its captain made the call roughly an hour later to evacuate the vessel, navy chief Rear Admiral Garin Golding said in a press conference on Sunday. “Those on board the life boats and sea boats from HMNZS Manawanui were transferred to vessels that responded to the rescue call and were transported ashore,” the NZ defence force said in a statement.
