More than 30 bank branches have disappeared from Greater Manchester's high street in the last three years

Thirty-six high street banks have closed in Greater Manchester in three years, according to new data.

In total 1,822 bank branches have shut or announced their intention to close since February 2022, when a voluntary agreement saw the major banking groups commit to assessing the impact of every closure. The LINK initiative to assess the impact of closures - which was agreed by all the major banks including Barclays, HSBC, Natwest, Lloyds, and Halifax - was set up to ensure vulnerable customers and small businesses were not left behind in the switch to cashless payments and virtual banking.

In Greater Manchester, Manchester saw the highest number of closures with nine; Wigan and Tameside have had five; Salford four; Stockport, Rochdale, and Bolton three; Trafford two; and Bury one.Age UK says its research shows the “disappearance of face-to-face banking” risks cutting millions of elderly people out of an essential service, which could make it “difficult if not impossible for them to manage their money and maintain their independence”.
