A number of supermarkets have begun using card-only policies for some services
Some of Britain's biggest supermarket have been making the transition to going card-only for some services. It comes after Tesco announced 40 of its cafe sites will go cashless last August.
While Morrisons still allows customers to have the option of cash or card at all of its locations, some stores do contain card-only self-service checkout machines. In stores where these machines are though, there are still options for manned checkouts with cash payments. Aldi still has both manned tills and self-service checkouts across its 1,000 UK sites but doesn't have any cafes or petrol stations which has been the main target of cashless schemes so far. Meanwhile, Co-op still has both manned and self-service checkouts across its 2,400 stores with some self-service being card-only.
Is it legal for business to reject cash payments? All businesses in the UK are legally allowed to refuse cash payments or even card payments if they desire. The previous government itself clarified in 2022 that it doesn't plan to bring in any policies that legally oblige a business to take cash payments.
