Departments ordered to find 'savings and efficiencies' with help of leading business experts from private sector

Departments ordered to find 'savings and efficiencies' with help of leading business experts from private sectorhas also instructed ministers to invite leading business experts to scrutinise their spending in Labour’s latest attempt to bring the private sector into Whitehall.

The spending review being launched is expected to conclude in June and will set the budgets for each Whitehall department between 2026 and the next general election, set to take place in 2029.

Each department will have its submission scrutinised by a “challenge panel” of external experts – set to include former senior managers from large banks, as well as representatives of think-tanks and universities – in a further bid to crack down on wasteful spending. Reeves said: “I said I would have an iron grip on the public finances and that means taking an iron fist against waste. By reforming our public services, we will ensure they are up to scratch for modern day demands, saving money and delivering better services for people across the country.”
