The beloved 'dirty food' pioneer Almost Famous, known for its colossal burgers and cult following, has announced its closure, sending shockwaves through Manchester and the hospitality industry. The restaurant, which launched the 'burger boom' in the city, is remembered for its bold branding, unique menu, and incredible burgers that drew long queues and became legendary.

It's become depressingly familiar to be hit with news of another restaurant or bar closing in this bleak January. But the announcement this morning of the closure of burger pioneers Almost Famous has sent shockwaves across not only Manchester , but the hospitality industry as a whole.

The confirmation of that came as soon as they opened, with queues out the door, down the narrow stairs and right around the block just to get in. As word spread about the mouth-watering, heftily-layered burgers and fries inside, the queues only got bigger. I was ready to hate it, and I wanted to hate it. "what can be so special about a BURGER" I thought. Until I actually tasted the damn burger. And then I knew why everyone queued.

Almost Famous summed up, if not surfed across, a period of sheer dirty food hedonism in the city. The launch of a "burger boom" where new restaurants would compete to create ever heftier, meatier, and topping laden creations. The brand would spread its wings to open in Liverpool and then Leeds - taking bus loads of Mancs to join them in the opening night party shenanigans of course. A further site in Greater Manchester would later follow - in Withington - although that would prove to be a short-lived step too far and was the first Almost Famous to close last year.

The news today that all branches are closing with immediate effect is particularly hard to stomach - not just because I can't face the fact it means I've eaten my last ever Triple Nom. Fans of the brand say they're gutted that the restaurants won't remain open a little longer for one last burger hurrah.
