An amber cold health alert has been issued for Lancashire as bone-chilling cold air is set to hit the county this week. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has warned of significant impacts on health and social care services, including a rise in deaths, particularly among the elderly and those with health conditions. The Met Office forecasts temperatures to drop to freezing with wind chill, feeling like -3C on Monday. The worst temperatures are expected early Thursday morning, with lows of -4C but feeling like -7C. Two yellow weather warnings for snow and ice are in place.

The forecasted weather is expected to have 'significant impacts across health and social care services', including a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The UKHSA said there is also likely to be an increase in demand for health services.
Two separate yellow weather warnings for snow and ice have been issued by the Met Office. The first, covering the whole of Lancashire, is in force until 12pm today while another comes into effect at 5pm and lasts until 10am on Tuesday.
