abc.net.au/news/some-schools-struggling-to-squeeze-in-students/101944380As 60,000 Tasmanian children returned to school today, some public schools were feeling the squeeze of rapidly rising enrolments. In a priority list of more than 100 government schools needing capital works, 21 are listed as priority one, including Dodges Ferry
Soaring house and rental prices have forced some families to move away from cities into outer suburban areas that were traditionally shack towns.Nicole Baxter's family moved from New South Wales to Dodges Ferry, east of Hobart, about four years ago. "Dodges Ferry, especially as the roads and everything improve, there's going to be more families that are going to be choosing to live in a place like Dodges, it's a lovely community," she said"There's a lot of ageing infrastructure there that needs to be improved as well, so these sort of modular buildings that they've given us are just bandaid solutions really."Ms Baxter is concerned about the effect on children's learning.
"When I arrived here as principal two years ago, we had an enrolment of 497 students; we've just exploded past 560 students in the last couple of days, so pretty massive growth for an area like this," he said. While the school is in line to undergo a major upgrade, it is struggling to keep up with demand.
