“I don’t cook because I love the act of cooking, I cook because I love sharing foods and having people together over a meal,” says chef Rahel Stephanie. Here, Vogue meets four supper club hosts championing their culture’s cuisine.
It was moving to London from Jakarta, via Singapore, at the age of 19 that thrust Rahel Stephanie into the world of gastronomy. Her story, she explains, wasn’t the typical “I’ve been in love with cooking ever since watching my mother do it as a child”.
Between sambal fried chicken, spicy coconut rice lemper and her signature pandan blondies, her menus cater to a crowd of stylish food enthusiasts, which include many fellow Indonesians, while simultaneously helping to educate the uninitiated. Already this year, she’s popped up in Bali and Melbourne, and this summer she’ll take on her third residency at London’s famed Carousel , as well as a stint at beloved Sri Lankan restaurant Rambutan.
