We tried out seven different supermarket mince pies to find out which were the best and which were the worst - and the results may surprise you
It's that season again when supermarket aisles are brimming with stacks of mince pies. The variety in stores has expanded, offering a range of toppings and flavours.
Based on appearance alone, most look quite similar - small, deep pies with crimped edges and various snowflake, leaf and star patterns on top. The pies from Sainsbury's and M&S are wider than the others and have a top that covers the entire pie, with the M&S ones featuring an open star in the centre.
The Sainsbury's pies weren't popular due to their dry and crumbly pastry, and the filling of Asda's was deemed a bit bland. All pies are topped with granulated sugar rather than dusting sugar, but the quantity varies across brands, reports the Manchester Evening News.
