They will not go quietly - and the row rages on
Heated debate over the future of a much-loved swimming pool rumbled on, as more than 150 people joined a meeting regarding the closure of Whitworth Leisure Centre earlier this month.
“The pool is not at the end of its life. It could have another two years in it, while a new facility is being built. It appears five million pounds of funding has been allocated from Sport England, but they don’t give funding without plans of exactly where the new pool will be and it sounds like it’s no way going to be in Whitworth. More Bacup I feel.
“Councillors say we should focus our efforts on fundraising for a new pool here but I don’t believe a new facility will be built in Whitworth. A lot of people feel like this decision was made behind the backs of residents and now they are getting more frustrated because we aren’t getting answers. She said: “It got heated now and again because people are really passionate about this. It is unfair that people who do not live in Whitworth made the decision to close the pool.
Many residents are concerned about the 12 schools that use Whitworth Pool, especially with the rising costs associated with trips and want to know where the schoolchildren are going to swim. “It was a shock to me as I wasn’t privy to the meeting or decision that was held behind closed doors at Rossendale Borough Council.
“The closure has a wide impact on so many people and groups. In my opinion, an entire generation of school children will be adversely affected through lack of swimming lessons and a local facility to use.
