Another East Lancashire local authority looks set to call for a safety review of the M65. Liberal Democrats have asked Pendle Council to join its Hyndburn and Burnley counterparts in writing to National Highways, Lancashire County Council, the transport secretary Heidi Alexander for the audit of accident risks on the arterial route.

Moved by Fence and Higham ward’s Cllr Brian Newman, it asks for the council to note that in 2023 the M65 was estimated to be handling circa 75,000 journeys per day – an increase of circa 15 per cent since 2013. It says there have been a "spate of major incidents on the M65 this year", including two fatalities.

It calls on the council to resolve to write to National Highways, Lancashire County Council, the Secretary of State for Transport, and local MPs to:
