Prime minister says campaign weighed heavy on many Indigenous people and result will be 'hard to bear'

The Australian prime minister, Anthony Albanese, has addressed the media after the voice to parliament referendum failed. Albanese recognised that for many Indigenous Australians 'the campaign has been a heavy weight to carry and this result will be hard to bear'.

As polls closed on Saturday evening, results quickly showed the referendum would not succeed. Albanese said this would not stop his government listening to Indigenous people and communities. 'This is not only in the interests of Indigenous Australians. It is in the of all Australians to build a better future for our nation'
