Vulnerable close contacts of people with invasive Strep A infections will be given antibiotics in a bid to contain rising cases of the disease, the UK Health Security Agency has announced 🔴 janemerrick23

, with pharmacists reporting they are still running short despite efforts by the Government to replenish stocks from warehouses.

There have been 16 deaths from iGAS among children in the UK since the start of September, including 14 in England. But the disease also affects older people, with 23 fatalities in England among the over-75s, 38 per cent of the total of 60 in all age groups. According to the latest figures from the UKHSA, there have been 652 cases of iGAS disease in England between September and November, with a high of 91 cases in the last week of November. This is more than double the average rate of iGAS for the same period in the previous five years, and higher than the 454 recorded in that period during the last worst season in 2017-18.Older people and pregnant women and their babies are particularly vulnerable to Strep A.
